Shangxi Gr

Shangxi Gr

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
early-Late Qingbaikouan (middle Tonian), Qb (60)

Province:
Anhui

Type Locality and Naming

Southernmost Anhui. The Shangxi Gr was named by Li Jie, Li Yuyao (Lee, Y. Y.) et al. in 1930. The type locality is the Shangxi Village, near Lantian, northwest of Xiuning County, Anhui Province. Synonym: Previously, the component formations in ascending order were: Zhangqian Fm, Banqiao Fm, Mukeng Fm and Niuwu Fm. Based on the tectonic deformation and the degree of metamorphism, the Shangxi Group now consists of the Mukeng Fm and Niuwu Fm (Zhou Hongrui et al., 1987) (see those formations for detailed descriptions), and the other formations are in the Shuangqiaoshan Gr

Synonym: (上溪群), Xikou Gr, because some later stratigraphers mistakenly considered the naming/type locality to be at Shangxikou (simply Xikou) southwest of Xiuning (so it is called also as the Xikou Gr). After verification by the Party of Regional Geological Survey, at present the name Shangxi Gr is retained for this Lexicon.

Lithology and Thickness

The Shangxi Gr is composed of low-grade metamorphosed clastic rock. The Shangxi Group is a suite of greenish gray and grayish yellow phyllite, slate and tuffaceous lithic sandstone intercalated with black sandy phyllite and silty slate. The para-metamorphic suite was derived from sandy and argillaceous sediments, composed of flysch deposits bearing graded beddings, variform sole cast, wavy beddings, laminations and micro cross-beddings (turbidite). The exposed thickness of the group is recorded up to 5500 m, but total thickness is more than 11,000 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Unconformably on the underlying Banqiao Fm of the Shuangqiaoshan Gr, or the Anleling Fm.

Upper contact

Unconformably overlain by the Likou Gr (Dengjia Fm).

Regional extent

Southernmost Anhui. The group is mainly distributed in Lantian, Tunxi (Huangshan City), Qimen County, southern Anhui Province, Xiuning County, Anhui Province.

Age

About the age of the Shangxi Group, some researchers considered that it belongs to Mesoproterozoic (based on the later intrusion of the 953-877 Ma old Xucun granite) and the others believed it belongs to Neoproterozoic. However, a SHRIMP U-Pb date of 877 Ma was acquired from the Mukeng Fm (Gao Linzhi et al., 2009). early-Late Qingbaikouan (middle Tonian) on schematic stratigraphic column.
